Team Mindcrafters Daily Update 1-25-16

Parents,

Reading - As students are starting over with a new AR goal for the 3rd quarter, I will be checking reading logs more often.  Students are expected to read every night and complete their logs.  Students may be asked to stay in for recess to read if they are not completing this portion of their daily homework, even if they are caught up with AR goals.  Reading every night is an expectation, and an essential part of reading growth and vocabulary acquisition.

Math - The next few weeks we will be learning "long" division. 4th graders are expected to be able to divide numbers of up to 4 digits dividends by 1 digit divisors. We will be learning two ways to divide - the standard algorithm (the one you probably learned in school) and the partial quotient method (a method you've probably never seen before). We will be building our understanding a little bit each day. As students gain comfort with long division, we will also begin learning to solve problems using variables and expressions, another challenging topic.

Team Mindcracfters Daily Update - 1-5-16

Happy New Year!  I hope you had a restful holiday filled with time spent with the ones you love.  It has been great to see all of the students this week! As a parent of teenagers know it can be challenging to get your child back into school and sleep routines at home.  Thank you for all that you do to for help to make sure your child is ready to learn at school each day.

Team Mindcrafters Daily Update 1-4-16

Parents,

Reading.  This quarter students started out with an advantage in their AR goals by taking a quiz on The Lemonade War (which was actually read in the first quarter).  Although many students used this advantage to help them go far beyond their quarterly goal, some used this to slow down in their nightly reading.  Regardless of where students are in their goal, 20 minutes of nightly reading is still an expectation.  I will be checking reading logs for some students on a daily basis for a while to help them get back into the routine of nightly reading.  Today I met with each student individually to discuss their progress, and students who will be having logs checked have been made aware.  Thanks for your help in making sure that your child is reading nightly, and bringing you the log to sign.  Remember that THEY are to fill out the log, and just get your initials.

Reminders:
  • Pizza Hut dine out night - Thursday, January 7
  • End of quarter - Thursday, January 14
  • Teacher Work Day (no school for students) - Friday, January 15
