Some pictures from this week.

Parents,

I took a few pictures from our paper hat day today.  Sorry that I forgot to get pictures from Mrs. Dressel's class.  There's also a couple pictures from our Toledo Blade crime reporter who visited on Wednesday.

Team Mindcrafters Daily Update 3-24-15

Dear Parents,

Attached are a couple pictures from our "Dress like a News Reporter Day".  Tomorrow we will be visited by a crime reporter from the Toledo Blade.

Reading - Students were given their new AR goals for the 4th quarter today.  I had an opportunity to conference with each student about their reading progress today, and to set goals (read every night, read longer books, more nonfiction, etc) with them.  We also cleaned out our school reading folder.  In addition to many papers coming home from this folder, they also are taking home their 3rd quarter AR record report, and the most recent STAR progress report.  I used both of these items to discuss in our conferences, as well as to help me set their goals.  Some of them already had pretty full take-home folders, so I encourage all of them to clean this out tonight!

Team Mindcrafters Daily Update 3-23-15

Dear Parents,

Right to Read Week.  This week we are celebrating reading with the theme -"Extra, Extra!  Read all about it!" Today we read from newspapers and magazines.  Tomorrow's activity is to dress like a news reporter or newsboy/newsgirl.  (See attached images for outfit ideas).Wednesday we will be visited by a reporter from the Toledo Blade.

Reading - Once again, due to the many activities of Right to Read Week, we will not have an ELA sheet this week.  That means no spelling list or reading log.  Since the quarter doesn't officially start until Wednesday, there will be no AR goal expectations this Friday.  This is a great opportunity for students to start working on a big chapter book to read this week, over break, and even the following week.  Students will need 12% of their goal by the Friday we return to school (April 10).  With three weeks until then, I highly encourage students to get ahead with their reading.  When the weather finally warms up, staying inside to catch up on reading is no fun!!  New AR goals will be set by Wednesday.

Reminders:
  • Art to Remember - forms due March 27
  • Annual Powerhouse 5K/1K run forms went home last week

Team Mindcrafters Daily Update 3-11-15

Dear Parents,

Math HW:  Students did an awesome job on the Learn Zillion homework last night!  I was very impressed at how many students figured out this method on their first effort.  If your child (or you) didn't figure it out last night, that's okay.  As I said, we'll be doing more with this method in class.  Students who did the problems correctly using this method earned an extra class dojo point for their efforts.  All students who at least gave it the "ole college try" earned a homework completion point.  Thank you to those of you who helped your children when they got stuck. It is appreciated!

Team Mindcracfters Daily Update - 3-10-15

Dear Parents,

State Testing.  Students only have their final mid year state test for Math (Part 2) this week.  Mr. Pransky and Mrs. Dressel's homerooms will be tomorrow while Mrs. Vanderstelt's homeroom will take theirs on Friday.

Math homework.  The students' math homework tonight is to watch 2 Learn Zillion videos and complete the packet that goes with it.  The videos will show a method of long division called the partial quotient method. This is a method for dividing which is very different that the traditional method that most of us probably learned in school.  I already told the students that I wanted them to try their best on the problems in this packet after watching the video.  If they have difficulty with it, that's okay.  We will go over these problems at school using this new method.

Dear Parents,

State Testing.  Students are taking state tests for Social Studies and Math (Part 2) this week.  This will be the end of state testing until late April.  With the time change, it is even more important to get your child to bed at a good time this week so that they are rested and ready to do their best.

Team Mindcrafters Daily Update 3-6-15

Dear Parents,

State Testing.  We are scheduled to finish up our testing next week!  Mr. Pransky and Mrs. Dressel will take their Social Studies test on Monday, and Mrs. Vanderstelt will take this test on Tuesday.  Don't forget about the Spring forward time change this weekend.

Reading: For ONE MORE WEEK we will not have an ELA sheet, spelling list, or reading log.  This again is due to the disruption of two tests, as well as additional programs scheduled.  Many students are still doing a great job of keeping up with their reading goals without a log to keep track:)

  • Yearbook orders are due

Team Mindcrafter Snow Day Science Challenge

Hi students,

I recorded a fun at-home science video for you to try.  If any students want to send me any pictures, videos or written descriptions (e-mail) of doing the experiments, you can earn extra class dojo points.

Students, DO NOT do this activity without your parent's permission.

Enjoy your day off,

Mr. Pransky

Here are some of our junior scientists!

Team Mindcrafter Snow Day Math

Parents/students,

Math testing.  Our first Math PARCC test was originally scheduled for Thursday.  I can't be sure when it will be scheduled with the cancelation today, but most likely it will still be this week.  The students have worked really hard, and we are ready!

Fractions!  The students have been doing a great job learning about fractions so far.  There are only a couple fractions related skills that we have not covered.  One of them is multiplying fractions.  Your child's homework for tonight would have been to watch this video and complete the attached pages. I am assigning it as independent work today instead.

Students will learn that multiplying fractions is just like repeated addition of fractions, which we have already learned.

for example:
  • 3 x 1/4 is the same as 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 = 3/4.
  • 5 x 1/2 is the same as 1/2 + 1/2 + 1/2 + 1/2 + 1/2 + 1/2 = 5/2 or 2 1/2

The video below will go into more detail about this and show how this can be shown with fractions models as well.  If possible, please have your child watch the linked video below, complete the attached worksheet and return it to school tomorrow.  If you are not able to print out the pages, the work may be done on scratch paper instead.

Thanks for your support with your child's learning this year!  We'll make it through winter...eventually!
